Budget-friendly home renovation tips for a festive makeover

OUT with the old, in with the new! This festive season, like all before it, is no different. A fresh look and revamped spaces, especially bathrooms and kitchens, often take centre stage. But what if one’s budget is smaller than the dream look?

Kaia Allen, Design Lead and Brand Strategist at Urban Yuppi, the retail boutique home decor and lifestyle store nestled in the heart of Shelly Beach, gives an in-depth solution.

“Interior design on a budget is achievable when you prioritise the essentials, invest in elements that last, and allow decorative pieces to build over time. Even small updates such as lighting, handles or greenery can make a noticeable difference without overspending.

“When planning your budget, it is important to set a realistic amount that reflects your goals and the scope of work. As a guideline, we recommend allocating around 15% of your home’s value for mid-range finishes. This ensures quality materials and thoughtful design. If you want more exclusive, designer-level finishes, consider a budget closer to 25% of your home’s value,” Allen explains.

One biggest mistake that she has observed is that people believe that renovation is something to leave until the end of the year.

“Renovation isn’t just about adding new cupboards, painting a wall, and adding handles. It goes into much more detail. Furthermore, budget and timeline need to cover the labour of removing the old items, working with an interior designer who will give you the best advice and design costs. Meetings with clients to discuss needs, as well as products and installation timescales.”

Regarding spending, “Many people tend to prioritise the visual aspects of a renovation before focusing on the fundamentals, which affect the long-term quality of the space. The bulk of the budget should be directed towards the core elements that ensure durability and functionality. This includes high-quality fixtures, strong cabinetry with reliable internal structure, durable countertops, and skilled labour. These are the foundations for a successful renovation and prevent costly problems in the future.”

Choosing products and embellishments wisely is extremely important. “They influence both the appearance and the long-term performance of the space. Finishes such as tiles, taps, handles, light fittings and surfaces play a major role in defining style, but they also determine how effortlessly the space will function over the years. Selecting materials that balance beauty, practicality and maintenance needs can elevate the entire renovation without requiring a larger budget. The right finishing touches can create a polished, cohesive look that feels intentional and timeless.”

With interior design trends constantly revolving, Allen offers a warning, “It is important for customers to remember that they come and go. It is not always wise to follow everything we see on social media or in print because some trends date very quickly. Working with an interior designer ensures that your renovation can still feel current but remains timeless, functional, and suited to your lifestyle long after the trend cycle moves on.”

She does, however, share that current trends that can fit long-term include warm earthy tones, natural wood accents, soft organic shapes, stone-inspired countertops, and textured finishes that bring a sense of depth and authenticity. Hardware trends feature brushed brass and soft metallic that work well with both modern and classic interiors. There is also a strong movement towards functional design, with smart storage, clean lines, open shelving, and low-maintenance materials becoming more popular.”

Allen concludes that setting budget expectations early helps create a space that is both practical and beautifully tailored to one’s lifestyle.
