January-March is the season when interest in “I-room Interior” is the highest. Before entering school in March, many families give desks and chairs according to the height of their child who grew up well, and buy the furniture that their child wants for the first time. Recently, as the importance of forming a leading lifestyle so that children can take the lead in daily tasks has increased, the demand for products that design children’s spaces beyond just student furniture, desks and chairs is increasing.

This is based on the perception that the student room should be a space to expand one’s own world while enjoying hobbies and rest, not just for learning.

Percis Group’s household furniture brand Illum introduced the student room series for the first time in Korea in 1999. Since its launch in 2003, “Linky Plus,” a steady seller item, has gained steady popularity, with cumulative sales exceeding 1 million units for 10 years until 2022.

An Illum official said, “It is a brand that has professionally studied children’s living spaces and proposed learning space solutions, and child-centered design was possible because it redefined student rooms as spaces where children grow into independent beings.”

Illum has been closely observing the children to find the best student room for the child who is a real user. Online surveys and in-depth user interviews were conducted to examine children’s body types, learning habits, and growth processes, and the observation results were implemented as details of Ilum Student Room furniture.

Illum’s “Newt” student room series is evaluated as a design that reflects these details well. Newt is a student room furniture that consists of a module of desks, drawers, and accessories.

Instead of matching the standardized design and size, it is designed so that children can choose the furniture they want to use. Children who like books can make large bookshelves by placing several bookshelves modules, and children who like props can choose drawers in the desired size.

Designs suitable for learning using multimedia, which are rapidly increasing, have also been added. Newt has installed mounting panels optimized for multi-learning according to the characteristics of children using various learning devices such as tablet PCs, laptops, and smartphones. While reading books, you can use laptops and tablets at the same time, and the panel is layered so that the desk does not feel narrow even if you put several devices on it.

Illum won the grand prize in the student furniture category at the “2024 Brand Customer Loyalty Awards” in recognition of its philosophy of making “furniture for children.” It is evaluated as a leading brand of student room furniture, being selected as the number one in the children’s room furniture category of the “2024 Maison Best Brand” award.

Illum’s flagship products have won several global design awards and are recognized for their design completeness. Roy, which maintains the No. 1 sales of student room products in Illum, is a bestseller that has exceeded 250,000 cumulative sales since its launch in 2016.

The product swept the design award by winning the iF Design Award organized by the German International Forum Design, the IDEA hosted by the American Industrial Design Association, and the Good Design Award hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and organized by the Korea Design Promotion Agency.

In particular, “Jerome Motion Desk,” Illum’s student room furniture product, won the 2021 Red Dot Award, the 2021 IDEA Design Award, and the 2022 iF Design Award after its launch in 2020, winning the world’s top three design awards.

Illum is trying a new hands-on pop-up starting this year. The intention is to create a learning place and provide an environment that fosters autonomy through experiences so that children can design their own spaces and make independent decisions.

Illum will run an experiential pop-up space called “Small Workers’ School” at the Pi Factory in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul from the 10th to 19th of this month. The school of small workers is designed as a space where children can realize the value of learning and discover potential growth potential. During the period, an experience program in which children can develop creative thinking will be held in the pop-up space, and lectures for parents will also be held. Illum offers ideas about the child’s growth and learning environment through lectures on efficient learning space construction and teaching methods for the child.

The lectures for parents consisted of lectures such as Lee In-ah, a professor at Seoul National University, “How a Child’s Brain Study Pleasantly,” “Descartes Math Bookstore,” and “Elementary Math Roadmap Shining in the College Scholastic Ability Test” by Han Ah-reum, a math textbook expert, and “A Special Day to Wake Up Children’s Economic Sense” by Kim Na-young, who wrote books on youth economic education.

Illum focuses on helping children design their own life goals and lead their growth, said an Illum brand official. “As a student room expert and a leading brand of student room furniture, Illum will continue to think from the perspective of children and parents and draw children’s growth and future together.”
