Warm White

In this Alabama river house, the kitchen’s Shaker-style cabinets and island are painted a warm white to keep the small space feeling light and airy. Wood knobs painted the same color and similarly toned marble countertops provide a soothing, seamless look.
Beyond, a gray-green scullery (the Brits’ term for a butler’s pantry) offers a slight color contrast.

Cozy dark green cabinets set the nostalgic mood in this remodeled kitchen by designer Cameron Ruppert. A fresh coat of green paint on the existing brown wood cabinets “reinvigorated the room without disrespecting it,” says Cameron. The previous cartlike island wasn’t very functional, so they opted for a bigger custom piece but kept its features on the minimal side with slab-style drawers and bail pull hardware.

Designer Raili Clasen opened up the kitchen of her family’s small cottage by removing the drop ceiling and painting the newly exposed ceiling and trusses a bright white. To ground the airy space—and speak to the lush California surroundings—she painted the lower cabinetry a deep olive green. Light wood planked walls blend the two. Adding to the fun, Raili painted a mix of vintage chairs a unifying avocad0 green.

Dark soapstone countertops and black-stained knotty alder cabinetry add to the rustic character of this Wisconsin lake home, while sunny yellow lanterns and an orange range offset the darker finishes. “We wanted the open kitchen and great room to feel like an old lodge,” says homewoner Sarah Anderson. The counter-to-ceiling blue-and-green tile backsplash echoes the lake home’s natural surroundings.

“Life is too short to live in a white box,” says designer Grace Mitchell. “I ask clients, ‘When you where young, what crayon did you always pick first out of the Crayola box?’ If you loved cornflower blue then, you’re going to love cornflower blue today…and tomorrow. Don’t worry about hating it in 10 years. Enjoy your home now!” To keep it balanced, Grace pairs bold cabinetry with quieter, primarily white, marble or quartzite countertops. For even more smiles, she added a watery blue range and hood. “Why choose fingerprint-y stainless steel when colored appliances are so fun and memorable?” she says.

The white planked walls of this Georgia kitchen designed by James Farmer feel fresh and bright off of the rich sage green cabinets. The natural wood shelves and range hood provide the perfect warm note as do the hits of red and blue in the runners, window shade, and china platters.
