It’s a new year, and with it, you may be feeling inspired to make some upgrades to your home. Well, the kitchen is generally considered one of the best places to start a kitchen remodel, whether you’re looking to increase your home’s value or just increase your own happiness. Kitchen renovations can range widely in scope and budget, however, so it’s important to have a solid plan before you start making any changes. In fact, the median spend on kitchen remodels is currently $60,000 (up from $55,000 the previous year), according to the 2025 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study—but if you make smart upgrades, these investments in your kitchen design can really pay off.
If you’re looking for some kitchen remodel inspiration, here are some of the major trends and takeaways from the Houzz report.
Traditional Style Is Making a Comeback
Overall style is a major reason that homeowners choose to renovate, with many looking to make an outdated kitchen feel more contemporary. Of the 81% of homeowners who change styles with their kitchen renovation, 12% opt for modern styles. Traditional style, however, is currently outranking modern style, with 14% planning to bring traditional style into their kitchen reno. Ultimately, though, the top kitchen style for renovating homeowners—which is transitional style, chosen by 25%—marries elements of both traditional and modern design.
Kitchen Expansions Are Taking Space From Dining Rooms
As home layouts and preferences change, the traditional dining room as we used to know it has changed, too. It seems lifestyles have shifted to favor more casual, flexible gatherings and eating around the kitchen island, and less formal, sit-down events at the dining room table. And the Houzz study reflects these changes. More than a third (35%) of renovating homeowners increase the kitchen’s footprint when renovating—and the number one room they steal space from is the dining room.

Islands are both a highly functional and on-trend part of many modern kitchens, and they play a big role in kitchen renovations. More than half of renovating homeowners (58%) either add an island or upgrade an existing one while remodeling the kitchen. Of the kitchen islands being upgraded, size is important, with more than half (52%) exceeding seven feet in length, while 29% are medium size at six to seven feet, and 19% are less than six feet.
Black Countertops Beat Out Gray and Beige
We know millennial gray has been falling out of favor in home design over the past couple of years—but what takes its place? According to Houzz, black is a contender, at least as far as countertops go. While white and off-white are still the top choices for upgraded kitchen countertops, black countertops are in third place, beating out both gray and beige.
Accent Cabinets Are Having a Moment

While accent walls may have become a bit outdated in recent years, accent cabinets are gaining popularity. More than half of renovating homeowners (52%) add or upgrade an accent cabinet or shelf while renovating their kitchen. Of the accent cabinets being added or upgraded, glass-front styles rank highest, selected by 36% of homeowners, followed by Shaker-style cabinets at 23%, and open shelves without doors at 16%.
Vinyl Flooring Is the Top Choice
When it comes to the most popular flooring choices for homeowners renovating their kitchens, three different materials are fighting a close race: vinyl/resilient flooring, stained or unstained hardwood, and ceramic or porcelain tile. However, vinyl/resilient flooring has won the top spot this year, chosen by 22% of renovating homeowners. Stained or unstained hardwood follows closely behind at 21%, and ceramic or porcelain tile follows at 20%.
