“People are ready to express their personal taste and individual love of color,” says Sophie Robinson, interior designer, color expert, and host of The Great Indoors podcast. “Christmas is the perfect time to ditch trends and surround yourself with all the twinkle, all the sparkle, and just do you,” she adds. Color is the perfect way to channel your unique personality and create a space that brings you joy. Here are some favorite Christmas color scheme ideas to get you started.

The classic red and green duo is a staple for Christmas traditionalists. But by focusing on just red and white, you can create a modern twist with a Scandinavian feel.

Robinson notes, “Red and white is a classic Christmas combo that reminds me of candy canes,” suggesting they make playful, edible ornaments. Opt for a white Christmas tree as your backdrop, which highlights red decorations beautifully and remains a trending choice.

Victorian Blue

While red and green are now emblematic of Christmas, Victorian-era decorations often featured blue, evoking elegance and tranquility. Achieve a timeless aesthetic with blue beadwork, ribbons, and porcelain figurines paired with snowy white lace. Enhance the scene with vintage blue-and-white China and polished glassware atop a white tablecloth. A fruit and nut centerpiece with candle holders completes the vintage charm. Blue, known for its calming effect, is a perfect pick for winter. Blend shades of blue “like navy with cobalt and turquoise to make it tonally interesting,” says Robinson. Offset with white for a crisp canvas and introduce gold for warmth and a hint of glamour.

Embrace 2023’s leading color trend with soft pink hues, perfect for adding warmth and coziness to your décor. Utilize blush and pastel pink ornaments to create a whimsical ambiance. Known to symbolize love and kindness, pink naturally complements the giving spirit of the season.

Robinson notes, “Pink really pops against green foliage,” making it an exciting choice for fir trees or holly accents. Add light green touches for a fresh twist on tradition. Opt for eucalyptus over holly and choose copper, rose gold, and champagne metallics for a stylish update that eschews classic gold and silver.

Embrace the beauty of green, reminiscent of a lush, conifer forest, for your holiday décor. Green is versatile, blending well in both traditional and modern settings. Known for its calming effect, green is perfect for the bustling winter season. If your home already features green tones, use these as a base for your holiday decorations.

Robinson notes the importance of sustainability, suggesting, “I think it helps if your Christmas decor complements your interior style, mostly from a sustainable point of view. We all know that chucking out last year’s decorations to buy into a new color trend is really wasteful.” Opt for natural elements like pinecones, acorns, and branches; enhance them with glitter or metallic paint, then incorporate these DIY elements into your tree or mantel display.

Embody the joyful spirit of Christmas with a dazzling array of colors. This vibrant style is perfect for minimalists who favor a multicolored tree adorned with festive lights and personal favorites. Robinson, an advocate for “more the merrier,” says, “Multicolored is my go-to color palette. You just can’t have too many colors. Metallic brights give a more luxe feel … so I’d go that way for a more sophisticated look.”

Her decor mirrors her love for vivid, jewel toned shades, such as cobalt blue, purple, fuchsia, emerald green, and canary yellow; she compares it to a box of colorful chocolates—ideal for the festive time.

For minimalists seeking a refreshing alternative to vibrant hues, a black-and-white palette is tastefully elegant and modern. A black-and-white tree adorned with monochrome baubles, pearl strands, or plaid ribbons creates a striking look. Consider a flocked tree for a snowy effect. Host with style using a white tablecloth and matte black dishware. Keep centerpieces simple with metallic mini trees or evergreens adorned with black-and-white bows. Soften the atmosphere with textures like faux fur or knitted throws, and add candlelight for warmth. To invigorate the scene, Robinson advises adding a dash of red or canary yellow.

For a sustainable and cost-effective Christmas, embracing vintage ornaments can be both rewarding and eco-friendly. Robinson states, “I much prefer to cherish my Christmas decorations and enjoy bringing out the same ones every year. I love the nostalgia of it all,” Vintage Christmas decor brings a heartfelt connection to traditions. “I think looking back to the past is a big part of the Christmas tradition, so if you can build on your existing collection with a few well-chosen additions each year, you will soon build up an original collection and story,” says Robinson.

Decorate with timeless classics such as gingerbread houses, nutcrackers, and ceramic Christmas trees. Robinson encourages fully embracing retro baubles and fifties kitsch, suggesting Shiny Brites in rich colors like mustard, aquamarine, bright pink, and emerald. Complement them with silver or copper for an eye-catching finish.
