The exterior of a historical building located at 232 Commercial Street in the historic district of Nevada City may be repainted with a new color scheme if an application is approved by the Nevada City Planning Commission during a meeting slated for September 19 at 1:30 p.m.
The subject building is shown on the 1898 Sanborn maps, and was included in the National Register of Historic Places.
Property owner James Hughins is requesting to repaint the exterior of the building in a new color palette, according to the staff report.
“The building is currently a grayish blue with white trim. The proposed color scheme is a grayish green body/siding with two trim colors and two accent colors,” according to the staff report.
Since the August meeting, the applicant has hired a color consultant to assist with the color scheme.
A building permit for a tenant improvement for the interior of the building was received and finalized in 2011 for use as a wine tasting room.
“A re-roof permit was issued in 2010 and a few minor interior work building permits are on file, but no architectural review seems to have been done for this site since the work in 1978,” according to the staff report.
The Planning Commission, acting as the Architectural Review Committee, may approve the application for the repaint of the exterior if generally compatible with Mother Lode Architecture, and is compatible within the context of the surrounding neighborhood.
The colors that are proposed for the repaint of the body of the historic building are Knoxville gray, with the trim proposed in several colors from the Benjamin Moore Historical Collection palette or Benjamin Moore Williamsburg Paint Color Collection.
Areas of trim are proposed in Everard Blue, Livingston Gold, Palladian Blue, and Buckhorn Brown.
The Commission may also approve the architectural review application for the repaint of 437 Broad Street owned by Jody and Richard Beaty.
Current property owners are proposing to repaint all the buildings on the property including the residence, carriage house, and backyard shed.
The subject residence is shown on both the 1898 and 1912 Sanborn Maps in substantially the same location as the current residence, however, the carriage house is not depicted on either map.
The Assessor does not have an estimated construction date for the carriage house, but staff can assume it was constructed prior to 1962 after which a building permit would have been required.
The single family residential property is ornate and detailed with buttons, cut outs, ringed porch posts, and crown molding.
The applicants received recommendations from Sundance Colors, a color consulting group for architectural spaces.
Hampshire Gray, Mopboard Black, Lime White, Pearl, Apollo Blue, and Nelson Blue were recommended colors.
