Is a Pro-Style Kitchen Range Worth It? What Experts Say

Key Points

  • A professional-style range can elevate your cooking experience with more power, space, and customization options.

  • Before investing, consider your cooking habits, kitchen space, and budget to determine if the upgrade is worth it.

If you frequently find yourself in the kitchen, then you might be wondering whether a professional-style range makes sense for you. With more power, space, and customization options, this oven might be just the thing that kicks your cooking up a notch.

However, there are a few things to consider before you splurge on a dream range. We spoke to experts about some of the benefits—and drawbacks—of pro-style ranges, and whether they’re really worth it.

  • Brit Angelesco, the executive vice president of ZLINE, a luxury kitchen appliance retailer
  • Hannah Pregont, an appliance expert and creative director of AJ Madison, an online kitchen appliance retailer
  • Maggie Lloyd, a chef and restaurant consultant with 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry

What Is a Pro-Style Range?

Professional-style range ovens are inspired by commercial restaurant appliances, but are intended for home use. A pro-style range typically includes higher British thermal unit (BTU) burners, built-in griddles, larger ovens, heavy-duty knobs, dual-fuel capabilities, and extended stovetops.

Benefits

There are many benefits to using a pro-style range if you’re an avid home cook. “The biggest is performance, with higher heat output, precise temperature control, and faster preheating that make tasks like searing, boiling, and baking more efficient,” said Hannah Pregont, creative director of AJ Madison.

Benefits include:

  • Wider range of BTUs for temperature precision
  • More space and flexibility due to wider cooktops
  • Larger ovens that can accommodate cooking multiple dishes
  • Customization options that can include different burner layouts, griddles, and custom finishes
  • Commercial-grade materials and heavy-duty construction for longer durability

“Having a professional-style range gives you flexibility and confidence instead of forcing you into a one-size-fits-all solution,” said Brit Angelesco, executive vice president of ZLINE. Angelesco notes that pro-style ranges also provide better functionality due to their higher BTU range, which allows for precise temperature control.

“Customization plays a big role, too,” she says. “Whether it’s tailoring finishes or accent details, those choices help create a refined product that feels cohesive and professional, while still reflecting individuality.”

Drawbacks

Pro-style ranges sound like a dream, but before you buy one, make sure to consider your kitchen’s current capabilities.

“From a technical standpoint, they often require more robust ventilation, proper electrical or gas hookups, and enough space to accommodate their larger size and heat output,” says Angelesco. “These requirements can add complexity during installation, or limit where a range can be placed.”

If you’re more of a novice cook, then the wide range of power might be intimidating at first. “The higher heat output means there’s less margin for error, so food can burn quickly if you’re not used to cooking on such powerful burners,” says Pregont.

How Much Do They Cost?

“Professional ranges can vary widely in price, starting around $2,000 and climbing well beyond $20,000, particularly when you’re looking at long-established luxury brands,” says Angelesco.

If you’re eyeing a pro-style range, consider one of Pregont’s recommendations. “Some well-known and trusted brands in this space include Wolf, Viking, Thermador, BlueStar, and JennAir,” she says.

Is It Worth It?

So, is a professional-style range worth the cost? It depends on how you use your kitchen.

“If someone really cooks a lot, and does more than just the basics, then it’s worth the expense,” says Maggie Lloyd, a professional chef and restaurant consultant. “If you frequently cook for a lot of people, or cook dishes that need a lot of burners, then yes, it’s great. But if you aren’t doing that—which is totally fine—it’s probably not worth the cost or the hassle.”

Angelesco agrees and notes that, ultimately, the range is worth it when it aligns with your habits, space, and the way you want your kitchen to work for you.

“For people who spend a lot of time in the kitchen, enjoy cooking from scratch, or want more power and control, the performance and durability can absolutely justify the cost,” said Angelesco. “On the other hand, if cooking is more occasional, or simplicity is a priority, then a professional range may offer more capability than you truly need.”
